Clear command in Excel

There are many occasions when we want to clear unwanted things while working in excel.

In this blog post we will learn about “Clear” command in excel which will help us to clear the unwanted things in excel sheet. We can find this command in “Home” tab under “Editing” group as shown in below image.


“Clear” command is divided in 06 categories:

1. Clear Formats
2. Clear Comments
3. Clear Hyperlink
4. Remover Hyperlink
5. Clear Content
6. Clear All



Let’s learn about this in detail…

We have created dummy data to explain all these categories as shown in below image. Let us understand this dummy data first.


This data is well formatted with header row highlighted with dark blue color with bold font having white font color. All the other rows are having light blue color with blank font color. Also we have applied “All Borders” to our entire data. (To learn more about types of borders Click Here).

We have inserted two comments in our data in “Experience in Years” column for employees “CCC and “DDD”.

We have also provided hyperlinks to all the employee names.

We will select this entire data and will apply each of the above listed Clear categories one by one.


Clear Formats:

This option will help us to “Clear only formatting” which we have applied to selected data. All the content, comments and hyperlinks will remain as it is.

First, select all data and click on “Clear Formats” option. 



This will results in removal of all the formats from selected data but all content, comments and hyperlinks will remain as it is.



Clear Comments:

This option will help us to “Clear only Comments” which are present in selected data. All the content, formats and hyperlinks will remain as it is.

First, select all data and click on “Clear Comments” option. 



This will results in removal of all the comments from selected data but all content, formats and hyperlinks will remain as it is.



Clear Hyperlink:

This option will help us to clear the hyperlinks from respective cells (keeping formatting of respective cells as it is) but all content, comments and formatting from other cells will remain as it is. 

First, select all data and click on “Clear Hyperlink” option. 



This will results in removal of all the hyperlinks from respective cells (keeping formatting of respective cells as it is) but content, formats and comments will remain as it is.



Remove Hyperlink:

This option will help us to clear the hyperlinks from respective cells (also removes formatting of respective cells) but content, comments and formatting from all other cells will remain as it is. 

First, select all data and click on “Remove Hyperlink” option. 



This will results in removal of all the hyperlinks from respective cells (also removing formatting of respective cells) but content, comments and formatting from all other cells will remain as it is.



Clear Content:

This option will help us to clear all the content from selected cells but formatting and comments inserted in selected cells will remain as it is. 

First, select all data and click on “Clear Content” option. 



This will results in removal of all the content from selected cells but formatting and comments from selected cells will remain as it is.



Clear All:

This option will help us to clear all the above listed categories at a time. It means it will clear all the content, formats, comments and hyperlinks from selected cells.

First, select all data and click on “Clear All” option.



This will results in removal of all the content, formats, comments, hyperlinks from selected cells.
