SUMIF Function in Excel


In this blog post we will learn to about SUMIF function in excel.

Whenever we want to calculate the SUM based on certain criteria or condition, we can use the SUMIF function.

Where to find SUMIF function on Excel Screen:

SUMIF function can be found under “Math & Trig” function category under “Formulas” tab and under “Function Library” group as shown in below image:


Once we click on “Math & Trig” function category, we can see list of various Math & Trig functions available in excel. SUMIF function is highlighted with blue color in below image.


Once we click on SUMIF option as highlighted above, we will get the function argument dialog box as shown in below image.



Syntax of SUMIF Function:

The Syntax of SUMIF function is as below:

=SUMIF(range, criteria, [sum_range])


Arguments of SUMIF Function:

SUMIF function takes three arguments as listed below:

range: It is cell range which you want to evaluate or in other words, it is cell range from which we want to apply condition or certain criteria to calculate sum.

criteria: This is criteria or condition based on which we want to calculate the sum. This can be in the form of cell reference, expression or text.

sum_range: This is actual cell range from which we want to calculate the sum.

Example of SUMIF Function:

Let’s take an example to learn how we can use SUMIF function to calculate SUM based on certain criteria or condition. We have created dummy data:

Blue Highlighted Cells: In these cells we have listed names of few employees and sales figures of these employees based on regions: East, West, North & South.

Brown Highlighted Cells: In these cells we will calculate the sum based on each region with the help of SUMIF function.



For this select a cell where we want to apply SUMIF function. In this case we have selected cell F3.



Apply SUMIF function in selected cell F3 as shown in below image.


Once we press enter button on our keyboard then we can see the output of SUMIF function.



To find the output in remaining cells just copy and paste the SUMIF function in remaining cells. We see the output as shown in below image.



In this way we can use SUMIF function in excel.
