Fraction Format in Excel

In this blog post we will learn in detail about “Fraction Format in Excel”. There are many instances when we need to use numbers in fraction format in excel. If we can learn to use “Fraction Format in excel” wisely, then we can work very effectively while dealing with fractions in excel.

We can use any of these 03 methods to get the “Format Cells” dialog box and select “Fraction” Category as shown in below image. With this we can see all the additional options under “Fraction Format in excel” as shown in below image:



Sample: This option is common in all the formats which we can see under Fraction Category in above image which we can use to see how the selected numbers will look in Fraction Format.

Type: We can choose any of the fraction format under this option as per our requirement. There are total 09 fractions formats available under this.

The 09 Fraction formats available under “Type” category are listed as follows:

1. Up to one digit (1/4)
2. Up to two digits (21/25)
3. Up to Three digits (312/943)
4. As Halves (1/2)
5. As Quarters (2/4)
6. As Eights (4/8)
7. As Sixteenths (8/16)
8. As Tenths (2/10)
9. As Hundredths (30/100)

We will convert decimal number 147.258 into each of these 09 fraction formats. This will help you to understand this topic in detail

Up to one digit (1/4):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have nearest single digit Denominator.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format Up to one digit and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format Up to one digit as shown in below image.

Up to two digits (21/25):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have nearest double digit Denominator.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format Up to two digits and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format Up to two digits as shown in below image.


Up to Three digits (312/943):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have nearest triple digit Denominator.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format Up to Three digits and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format Up to Three digits as shown in below image.


As Halves (1/2):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “2”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Halves and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Halves as shown in below image.



As Quarters (2/4):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “4”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Quarters and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Quarters as shown in below image.


As Eights (4/8):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “8”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Eights and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Eights as shown in below image.


As Sixteenths (8/16):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “16”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Sixteenths and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Sixteenths as shown in below image.


As Tenths (2/10):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “10”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Tenths and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Tenths as shown in below image.


As Hundredths (30/100):

This Fraction Format will help us to convert the decimal value into fraction which will have Denominator value as “100”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format As Hundredths and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format As Hundredths as shown in below image.


Limitations in Fraction Format in Excel:

If excel is not able to display the correct output into selected Fraction Format then excel will round off the output value.

For example, if we want to convert the decimal value 1.75 into “Fraction Format up to two digits”, excel will display the output as 1 3/4 which is similar to “Fraction Format up to one digit”.

1. Select the value which we wish to convert into Fraction Format Up to two digits and select “Fraction” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Fraction Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).



2. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the decimal value is now converted into Fraction Format with Denominator of only one digit instead of converting it into Fraction Format Up to two digits.
