Scientific Format in Excel
In this blog post we will learn in detail about “Scientific Format in Excel”. There are many instances when we need to convert numbers in scientific format while working in excel. If we can learn to use “Scientific Format in excel” wisely, then we can work very effectively while dealing with such values in excel.

Select this cell which we wish to convert into Scientific Format and select “Scientific” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Scientific Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).
This format will display number in “Exponential Notation” in E+n format where E is considered as base of the number and n is considered as power of that number.

We can use any of these 03 methods to get the “Format Cells” dialog box and select “Scientific” Category as shown in below image. With this we can see all the additional options under “Scientific Format in excel” as shown in below image:
Sample: This option is common in all the formats which we can see under Scientific Category in above image which we can use to see how the selected numbers will look in Scientific Format.
Decimal Places: With this we can increase or decrease the decimal places of number which is converted into Scientific Format.
Let’s explore this format in with the help of two examples.
Example 1:“Exponential Notation” in E+n format
1. We have inserted a number value “123456789” in a cell.
2. Select this cell which we wish to convert into Scientific Format and select “Scientific” category under Number Tab which will help us to see the additional options available under “Scientific Format”. (You can use any of the 03 methods to get this “Format Cells” dialog box, click here to read more about these methods or press “Ctrl+1” keys on keyboard).
3. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the selected number in now converted into Scientific Format.
Example 2:“Exponential Notation” in E-n format
1. We have inserted a number value “-123456789” in a cell.
3. Once we click on “OK” button, we can see that the selected number in now converted into Scientific Format.
IMPORTANT POINTS:
1. If we have number which has 12 or more digits then excel will automatically convert this number in “Scientific Format”.
2. If the number is greater than 0 then this format will display number in “Exponential Notation” in E+n format (where n will have +ve sign).
3. If the number is less than 0 then this format will display number in “Exponential Notation” in E-n format (where n will have +ve sign).
